Garage Floor Prep for Ikea Mudroom

Before we can start installing our IKEA mudroom garage, I needed to prep and paint it. If I am being honest, this was a pretty time consuming task but a necessary step to make it look nice.

Here is a look at my garage before (EEK! Not too pretty!)

First, I used Rustoleum Seal Krete 3-in-1 cleaner I basically just cleared out the garage, poured this on and used a hard bristle brush to scrub and hosed off. After washing, I waited about 24 hours for the surface to be totally dry.

Then, I used a clear primer to help make the paint stick. (it’s been about 6 months now and the floor is holding up great!). I opted to use one that did not etch, as I got scared that it would etch the rest of the garage floor and I was not quite ready to tackle that. This was the least rewarding step bc it goes on clear. I only did the floor, not the wall bc that doesn’t get much traffic ;)

Now we are ready to paint! I used Epoxy seal concrete and garage paint in Charcoal Gray. I ended up doing 2 coats - waiting about 24 hours in-between to . Just used a small higher nap roller and got on my hands and knees painting.

And honestly that is it for the prep work. I did end up hiring out a painter to paint the rest of the garage white - it really needed it. They actually painted after the IKEA mudroom was already installed. All in all it took about 3 days, but it was totally worth it! This garage was super gross!

Here is a look at the before and after just of the stairs - before the white was repainted.

Next post - we will actually install our IKEA Mudroom Hack!
